Coco Peat as Hydroponic Medium

Coco Peat Hydroponic Medium

Dry Coco Peat in tile and brick form.

Coco peat is a popular potting mix ingredient and can be used as a hydroponic medium. Coco peat is a great hydroponic medium because it is very light in volume weight and It absorbs and retain water very well. Its water retention is so good that it could last long enough until you refill or water your hydroponic system. One of the benefits of using coco peat for your hydroponic system or even your potting mix is that it’s organic itself. It’s also very light in weight compared to soil or gravel and it can be reused as a potting soil mix, discarded or replaced easily.

Coco peat is also known as coir pith  or coir dust. It’s basically coconut husks ground to powder form. It’s a by-product from the extraction of premium coconut husks or factories that use coconuts as a raw material. You can purchase coco peat in tiles, bricks or even blocks depending on where you get them. I buy mine from hardware stores inside malls in Manila. Ace Hardware, Wilcon, Do It Yourself and Handyman or other similar hardware supplies in malls should carry them in their gardening and lawns section.

When Coco Peat is wet, it expands to almost 300% of it’s dry size and a small brick can easily fill up a 1gallon pot. That’s enough accommodate a lot seedling trays and small pots for your hydroponic system or container garden.

As a potting soil mix and a hydroponic medium, Coco Peat is best mixed with other mediums such as hydroton, pebbles and vermiculite, perlite to add better drainage and weight. The weight you add to coco peat helps to hold and support plants to be upright and avoid falling over during a windy day. Coco peat is best used for sprouting seeds since coco peat has low levels of NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium) and seedlings do not require high levels of these elements and would only need them when they start growing their first true leaves.

To use Coco Peat as a hydroponic medium, it is best mixed with gravel, pebbles, vermiculite, perlite or hydroton to add better drainage and allow oxygen to circulate to the roots. Coco peat on its own will compact itself like soil and would inhibit air circulation. Adding any other fertilizer such as vermicast/vermicompost is not necessary since the plant already has access to all the nutrients it needs from SNAP’s hydroponic nutrient solution. It may also be redundant and costly to add any soil additives or organic/inorganic fertilizers.

Coco Peat is cheap (the cheapest amongst all the known hydroponic mediums) but should not be used by itself. Be sure to check out your nearest gardening supply or when you visit malls that have big hardware stores in them.
